Fitting Your Bra

Every bra fits differently and although taking measurements is certainly an effective guide, it is even more important to look at the overall fit of the bra once you have it on.  We encourage you to take your measurements and then check the fit of your bra using our guidelines below to help ensure a proper fit.

Bra Measurement

Your bra size is comprised of two parts, the band size and the cup size.  Please follow the instructions below to determine the size of each.

Band Size

The band of your bra is the aspect that fits around your ribcage.  To determine your band size, put on an unpadded bra and then wrap a tape measure around your ribcage just beneath your bust, usually at the lower edge of your bra’s band.  Be sure that the tape measure is snug, but not tight, and straight across your back.  Take the measurement and round it to the nearest whole inch.

If your measurement was an even number, add four inches to it.  If your measurement was an odd number, add five inches to it.  The resulting number is your band size. For example, if your measurement was 29 inches, you would add 5 inches to it to obtain your band size of 34.

Cup Size

Your cup size is determined by measuring the fullest part of your bust and then subtracting the measurement of your band size to calculate the difference.  Each inch of difference represents one cup size.

Wrap your tape measure over the fullest part of your bust taking care that the tape is straight and not too tight.  Determine the difference.

Checking the Fit of Your Bra

Your bra should fit smoothly without any wrinkles, overspill of your bust, or the band riding up.

Here is a quick check list to help you know how to remedy any problems that you may encounter when fitting your bra.

Issue:

The under wire is digging in under the armpit.

What’s Wrong:

The cup size is too small; the under wire should encase the entire breast, not dig into it.

Solution:

You need a bra with a bigger back size and/or a bigger cup size.

Issue:

The band at the back of the bra rides up.

What’s Wrong:

The band of the bra is too big.

Solution:

You need a bra with a smaller back size.

Issue:

Your breasts are falling out of the bottom of the under wire.

What’s Wrong:

The band of the bra is too big and the cup size may be too small.

Solution:

You need a bra that is smaller in the back and possibly bigger in the cup.

Issue:

You have a bumpy silhouette under clothes.

What’s Wrong:

The cup size is too small, causing your breasts to overspill.

Solution:

You need to increase your cup size until you have a smooth silhouette.

Issue:

You have Indents in the shoulder where the straps have dug in.

What’s Wrong:

The bra is too big in the back and not big enough in the cup, causing you to shorten the straps too much for needed support.

Solution:

You need a bra that is smaller in the back and bigger in the cup.

Issue:

The cups of the bra are puckering or wrinkling.

What’s Wrong:

You are not filling out the cup properly because the band and/or the cup size is too large.

Solution:

You need a bra with a smaller back and/or cup size.
